Dear Sir / Madam,
Institute of Palliative Medicine, Medical College, Calicut, Kerala is conducting an examination at the national level in JANUARY 2010 for Bruce Davis Gold Medal in Palliative Medicine for young doctors in India . Doctors who
appear(ed) for their final MBBS examination between 31 December 2006 and 31 December 2010 from any Medical College in India can apply for the examination
conducted by the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut, India. There will be two levels
of examinations: an open screening test at national level at the candidate's place and a
final examination in Calicut. There is no registration fee for this examination
The screening test comprises of one hundred multiple choice questions. The application
form and questionnaire for the screening test are downloadable from this blog. These can also be collected
from the nearby palliative care centres or Principals of many of the medical colleges.
Candidates can work on the questionnaire on their own. A list of possible resources
including books and web sites are enclosed . Guidance may also be available from the near
by palliative care units / specialists. The completed questionnaires along with the
application forms should reach the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Pain and Palliative
Care Society, WHO Demonstration Project, Medical College, Calicut- 673008, Kerala,
India only by postal before 15 november 2009
Ten top scorers in the screening test will qualify for the final examination to be held at the
Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut. The selected candidates are entitled to III a/c
return fare to Calicut by train and will be provided accommodation at the institute during
the final examination.
The final examination will consist of two parts: Theory & Assessment of clinical skills. The
final examinations will be in January 2010.
The winner of the final examination will be awarded the Bruce Davis Gold Medal in
Palliative Medicine, a citation and cash award of Rs. 25,000/- (Rupees twenty five
thousand only).

Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy inaugurated the State Institute of Sports Medicine in our College on feb 14th. The institute would for the time being function under the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). The initial work on the project was begun by the Department of PMR and the government had allotted Rs.1 crore in the 2008-09 budget for the project. Currently, the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) at Patiala is the only centre of national status in sports medicine. The project is estimated to cost Rs.4.94 crore. The institute will have necessary facilities, including out-patient clinic, in-patient wards, operation theatre and diagnostic services. It will have well-equipped physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. After it becomes fully functional, the institute would be de-linked from the Department of PMR and function as a separate department.
An out-patient (OP) clinic for sports injuries would begin in the Department of PMR . The clinic will initially function from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays. The new diagnostic and therapeutic equipment will become functional by March.

new casualty wing opened

Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy teacher opened the new casualty wing on Sunday.

The renovation cost was Rs.49 lakh. Modern equipment, bought at a cost of Rs.1 crore, have been installed.

The casualty wing now has an information counter, an examination hall, separate observation rooms for men and women, a nurses’ station, a special room for patients admitted on critical conditions, an emergency operation theatre and x-ray and ECG rooms. There are specialty wings and facilities for dressing and washing and those for medicine, surgery, orthopaedic, dental and ENT departments.

Special operation theatres have been set up for orthopaedic surgery. Every patient can be observed from the nurses’ station, manned by a nursing superintendent and eight staff nurses. The wards can be reached from the casualty wing.

A public relations officer has been appointed to inform relatives of patients the status of those admitted and the details of diseases.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC), Kozhikode is set up in an area of 1100 Sq ft inside the Medical College library. The state-of-the-art facility consists have a Linux based mid-range server, 16 high-end PC workstations with 100 MBPS interconnectivity, and the supporting infrastructure.

The salient highlight of the Learning Resource Centre is the Software based mirrored CD-jukebox, which can store the contents of hundreds of medical CDs. Multiple users, utilizing the high-speed interconnectivity for viewing the visually rich multimedia characteristic of medical procedures, can then seamlessly browse the contents. CDs are indexed based on specialized medical topics and can be accessed randomly, with deep searching facility, based on keywords. The server side application, forming the crucial portion of the software has been entirely developed in open source.
A Contactless Smart Card System, developed by C-DAC, controls the access and usage of the facility. All the requisite accounting based on terminal usage, utilization of peripheral resources, etc. is done automatically, with full transparency ensured.
Two high speed Internet connections(1 Mbps) enables direct Internet access, required for net-based subscriptions such as Medline, Up-to-Date, etc.
Subscription of MD Consult,a family of electronic information resources that meet the clinical content needs of physicians and other health care professionals.
Peripherals such as printer, scanner, photocopier, CD-Writer, etc. enable users to take copies of the material they find useful for preparing their study reports.
The comfort systems include the latest Cassette type air-conditioners, and high quality fittings for a conducive environment.
An on-line UPS and diesel generator ensure uninterrupted operation of the centre.

......and after long time one feather too added to our proud cmc... Super specialty block in-patient ward opened yesterday....Besides ICU equipment, beds and wheel-chairs, the new block would have 10 dialysis machines, EEG machines, defibrillators and ventilators.
......and other new facilities are....
extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ECSL) which uses shock waves to break a kidney stone into small pieces , radiotherapy simulator for cancer treatment, new intensive care unit for the department of medicine, modernised surgery ward, and new out-patient wing for the ophthalmology,surgery,medicine department.........ya our our college is developing day to day ....and the renovating work for a modernised casualty wing are currently on progress.....and yesterday minister announced A regional institute of paramedical sciences is being established at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) shortly.........

Ms. Sreemathy teacher announced that the ophthalmology wing of the medical college would be converted into the regional institute. A sum of Rs.50 lakh had been allotted for that purpose. This would be in addition to an equal amount that had been sanctioned for the project earlier....A sum of Rs.1 crore had been sanctioned for the hostel for MBBS students. An equal amount would be sanctioned soon for a hostel for nursing students. The government was considering a proposal to build a hostel for dental college also, she said.

C4CCCI, a project to take care of needy patients

Caring for Childhood Cancer and Chronic Illness (C4CCCI), a project to take care of children suffering from leukaemia and other chronic diseases, has started functioning in Kozhikode.
The project, a joint venture of the Department of Paediatrics, Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (KMCH), and Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kozhikode, was inaugurated on Wednesday by Nandu, a leukaemia survivor, and Sarika, who is undergoing treatment for the disease.
The launch of a charitable venture exclusively for leukaemic children marks another milestone in development of facilities for cancer patients in north Kerala, which already has a strong and extensive network of community-supported palliative care facility. In its first phase, the C4CCCI will mainly support over 100 children registered with the leukaemia ward of the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH) in the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

While the patients will get free chemotherapy treatment at the IMCH, the C4CCCI will provide palliative care and support to the poor patients who need expensive medicines. The C4CCCI will also provide travel costs for the patients and free food during their stay at the hospital. This is expected to help patients from poor families who have to travel a long distance to reach the hospital for treatment. A major objective of the C4CCCI is to raise the rate of cure among children afflicted with leukaemia since it has been found to be low compared to that in developed countries. The low cure rate here is believed to be because treatment is not affordable and within easy reach of many patients.

A number of organisations have already announced support to the venture. The Kuwait Calicut Muslim Association (KCMA) on Wednesday donated toys for leukaemia-affected children. Actor Mammootty, who is also patron of the Pain and Palliative Care Society, launched a website of the C4CCCI and promised his support to its activities.

Dr.Lulu Mathews, chairperson, C4CCCI, and head, department of paediatrics, CMC. said the Rs.35-lakh ward for leukaemics at the medical college had considerably improved facilities for treatment of the disease. Leukaemia was no longer considered an incurable disease, she pointed out citing several cases of children surviving the disease after treatment at the hospital.

C.A. Ali Koya, chairman, APEX International School, made the first donation to the venture. A member of the audience who chose to remain anonymous announced a donation of Rs.1 lakh. DR.T.P. Ashraf, Superintendent, IMCH, and DR.Ajith Kumar, Assistant Professor, Leukaemia ward, IMCH, also spoke at the function held at Taj Residency to launch the C4CCCI.

Calicut Medical College was established in 1957 as the second medical college in Kerala, India. Since then the institution has grown into the premier center of medical education in the state. The vast and sprawling Medical College complex is spread over an extensive area of 270 acres (1.1 km²) located about 10 km from the heart of Calicut. It is affiliated to the University of Calicut and serves 2/5 of the population of Kerala.

The foundation stone of the college was laid on May 29, 1957 by the then Governor of Kerala Dr.B.Ramakrishna Rao. The College was formally inaugurated on the August 5, 1957 by the then minister of Health, Dr.A.R.Menon whose initiative and zeal were responsible for the establishment of the institution. The task of organising the college was in the capable hands of Dr. K.N. Pisharady, the first principal. With the completion of the college building in 1959 the preclinical section was shifted from the temporary location to the campus.

The main hospital with 1183 beds, commissioned in 1966, was supplemented by the 610-bedded Institute of Maternal and Child Health in 1975 and by the Savithri Devi Saboo Memorial Cancer Institute with 101 beds and the Chest Hospital later on. A superspeciality complex is under construction. An artificial limb centre, Casualty (Emergency Services) complex, Samraksha Kendram and Vishrama Kendram were newer additions to the institution. The Dental College was inaugurated on 16 April 1984. Dr C T Mathew was the first director of the Dental College. Currently the dental college is functioning as an independent college. New blocks for the College of Nursing and College of Pharmacy are the recent additions.

From its modest beginning the institution has grown steadily for more than 40 years. The annual intake of undergraduate students was increased from 50 to 200. The consolidation of undergraduate medical education was achieved in the 1960s and the 1970s witnessed the establishment and expansion of postgraduate medical education in the various branches of medical science. With the establishment of training programmes in the superspecialities, the institution further widened its academic horizon. During the last decade almost all modern speciality services in medical care have been developed in the institution facilities for Kidney Transplant and Whole Body Scan. A well equipped Cath Lab and Tele Cobalt Therapy are recent additions to the hospital complex. A well equipped Medical Education Unit was also started. The college also conducts in Nursing, Pharmacy, Lab technician training, training of Radiological Assistants and Ophthalmic Assistants. MSc. Nursing was started in the College of Nursing during 1997. The Medical library and most of the departments of the college have been provided with computer facilities.

It started as a 100 bedded specialty hospital for respiratory diseases. This is a dedicated center for chest disease and tuberculosis, which undertakes lot of research and community oriented project as well.

A well equipped Medical Education Unit was also started . The Dental College which was earlier attached to Medical College has been separated and is functioning independently. The college also conducts in Nursing, Pharmacy, Lab technician training, training of Radiological Assistants and Ophthalmic Assistants. MSc.Nursing was started in the College of Nursing during 1997. The Medical library and most of the departments of the college have been provided with computer facility.
