Institute of sports medicine

Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy inaugurated the State Institute of Sports Medicine in our College on feb 14th. The institute would for the time being function under the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). The initial work on the project was begun by the Department of PMR and the government had allotted Rs.1 crore in the 2008-09 budget for the project. Currently, the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) at Patiala is the only centre of national status in sports medicine. The project is estimated to cost Rs.4.94 crore. The institute will have necessary facilities, including out-patient clinic, in-patient wards, operation theatre and diagnostic services. It will have well-equipped physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. After it becomes fully functional, the institute would be de-linked from the Department of PMR and function as a separate department.
An out-patient (OP) clinic for sports injuries would begin in the Department of PMR . The clinic will initially function from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays. The new diagnostic and therapeutic equipment will become functional by March.
